Meet Hospitality and Tourism student Laila Guirgis

“This experience is wonderful.”
—  Laila K. Guirgis, Hospitality and Tourism
Why Edmonds CC? The learning atmosphere is positive and enjoyable. Teachers are excellent, supportive, and pleasant. Classmates are diverse and friendly. The whole experience is wonderful.
Why now? I was laid off from work and I thought that was the end of my career…when I realized that there was another chance for me to go back to school, this was the best decision I've made in my life. I’ve learned a good deal about computers and I was able to shift gears to study things I enjoy and practice in my real life.
Before Edmonds CC I taught English and worked in the Department of Social and Health Services.
Degrees Bachelor of Arts in English
Biggest challenge catching up with the new trends and technology in education
Best college experience Shifting my weaknesses to strengths. Overcoming the negative effects of being jobless, and finding a whole new opportunity, in a new field that I chose and loved.
Favorite class Hospitality classes in general are very informational and enjoyable. I learned things in the Ecotourism, HSPTR 220 class that I have never heard about before. Career Management, BSTEC 295 is also very practical.
Advice for new students Enjoy learning. It is endless. You are never too old to learn.
Interests arts and crafts, writing poetry, cooking, and volunteer work at my church
Dream job Helping people to plan for a lifetime travel experience.
